How is military time calculated

Military Time, also referred to as "24-hour time" is a way of expressing the time of day with hours instead of the more familiar 12-hour system used by most people. Military Time is expressed in four digits, with the first two digits representing the hour and the last two representing minutes. The hours are numbered 0 through 23, beginning with midnight; minutes range from 00 to 59.

For example: 1:30 PM would be expressed as 1330 in Military Time format, or 0500 for 5:00 AM. Midnight is represented as a 0000 hour and noon is represented using a 1200 hour.

It helps to understand Military Time if you analyze it in relation to the traditional 12-hour clock. First rather than having two parts (AM or PM) Military Time operates on a 24-hour clock that starts over when it reaches 2400 hours (or 00:00). To calculate what time it would be on a 12-hour clock simply subtract 12 from any numbers over 12, then add AM or PM accordingly. For example 1530 hours = 3:30 PM and 0145 = 1:45 AM.

Military Time also uses an established set of conventions to express different times zones across the globe which are abbreviated by the codes Z (Zulu), +1 (first hour ahead of Z), -2 (2nd hour behind Z), for example 1745Z = 5:45pm GMT/UTC or 1145+1 = 6:45pm GMT+1 / UTC+1
